Meet some of our wonderful children

Up until the age of 14, I was a very healthy girl and was excited to be starting my first year of high school. I had always been very healthy and was never sick; therefore, the hospital world was an unknown part of my life. However, that quickly changed one fall day in November, 2000.

Adam was first diagnosed on Nov.6, 2006. Adam was 15 years old and actively involved with sports, hockey being the number 1 thing in his life. Adam had just had a lump removed from his left hand the size of a golf ball and they thought that this was just a cyst that occurred from a hockey injury never the less they sent it to pathology and it came back cancerous… YIKES.

Tyler was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) on May 16, 2005 when he was 3.5 years old.

Stephanie was diagnosed with Germ Cell cancer when she was 26 months old and received 6 bouts of chemo. She was and still is a very happy girl. Stephanie doesn’t remember those days but her father and I remember all too well how very sick she was.

Kaitlyn has been diagnosed with Wilms' Tumor again. As a 3 ½ year old, Kaitlyn was first introduced to the world of cancer. Back then, after almost a year and a half of treatment, Kaitlyn finally beat the cancer only to have it reappear almost 5 years later.

Katie was a wonderful child that brought much happiness to the people in her life. She was very intelligent and loved to sing songs and make crafts. She loved being a big sister to little Bryan. It was devastating to our family in December 2003 when Katie was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).

Keegan was diagnosed at age 7 months with late stage 3/ early stage 4 neuroblastoma. He endured 12 months of chemotherapy and had a severe infection each month from this treatment and had to be isolated for 7-12 days of antibiotics. He was able to be home for one week out of the month for a year. After chemo, 20 radiation treatments began and then he was feeling well for his 2nd birthday.

Caedan was a big, happy, healthy baby and toddler. With big brown eyes and curly brown hair. He reached milestones at the right times and kept us entertained with his “shows of singing and performing”. He was a first grandchild for Scott’s parents and a first nephew for his brothers.

Brandon was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (A.L.L.) on April 23, 2001 when he was just over 2 years old. Brandon was admitted to the hospital on April 8 (Diane’s (Mom) birthday). His sister Danielle was born on April 10, 2001…and 13 days later Brandon was diagnosed with Leukemia. His first treatment was April 25, 2001 and his last chemo treatment was on June 21, 2004 (3 years and 2 months later).

Our daughter Hannah was diagnosed with AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia), a very rare and aggressive form of leukemia, on June 28th, 2002. She was only 11 months old. At the time of diagnosis, our happy little baby had a terrible disease that had progressed to a point where she was in immediate danger. Our lives changed drastically that day.

On February 26, 1989 Paige was diagnosed with Bilateral Retinoblastoma, a solid tumour in the eye. Two days later on March 1st they removed her left eye and then began treatment for her remaining eye. Every morning for a month Paige would go to the hospital with her mom. Since Paige was only six months old she would need to be sedated, and because it was very important that she remain perfectly still during the radiation treatment. Still radiation scatters causing a number of other side effects.

February 22, 2005 was the date that has forever changed Shelby’s life and those of her entire
family.. Following many days of painful tests, procedures, and surgeries, in early April, Shelby
was finally diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma, a form of bone and soft tissue cancer (stage 4),
very rare for such a young child.

On January 29, 2005, Shauna was stricken by a virus that caused a severe seizure that lasted 1.5 hours leaving her unable to walk or talk. After 4 weeks in Children’s Hospital she was able to go home. The next two months were spent going to speech, occupational and physio rehab sessions at Pathways Centre for Children in Sarnia.

Abby, although only with us a short time, proved to be a fighter with a spirit and determination we will never forget. She was, and still is, a constant inspiration to us. We feel lucky to have shared in her life. So many people only dream about angels, we got to hold one!

It was a Monday, like every Monday before it… or so it seemed. Lucas came home from school complaining of sore legs. His teacher even remarked that he was rather weepy through the day and when she asked him what was wrong, he would say that his legs were aching. We spent the majority of the evening taking turns rubbing his legs hoping that it wasn’t anything more than growing pains.

After several repeated emergency room visits, Kyle was diagnosed with Choroid
Plexus Carcinoma (Brain Tumour) in October 2002 at the age of 18 months.
On Halloween that year, Kyle underwent a 16 hour surgery to remove his tumour. Two weeks later he began his first of many Chemotherapy sessions. By August of 2003 Kyle had had four more surgeries; two to remove scar tissue, one to insert a port-a-cath and one to insert a shunt.

Danny was diagnosed at the age of three with neuroblastoma. Danny was a fun loving always happy and focused child. He was determined to have a blast despite his disease.

Julie began showing symptoms of cancer back in August of 2004. She was always itchy all over her body but didn't present any other symptoms. That continued on and in the wintertime, Julie developped a nasty cough that just wouldn't go away. It was cold season so we figured that it would go away on its own, but it didn't!

On Sunday, August 12, 2001 we confirmed from a leg x-ray and bloodwork at our local ER, that Kent was unwell and was being transferred to Children's Hospital of Western Ontario that same day. They suspected cancer query leukemia. Four days later, after many tests, scans and biopsies, we learned Kent had an even more challenging cancer, Neuroblastoma Stage IV.

Steph has been sick for years and was treated for food allergies, gastrol reflux and a host of other problems before she became gravely ill, and was diagnosed with a Brain Tumour on February 23, 2004 in the Emergency Room of Children's Hospital of Western Ontario . As her parents, those were the most terrifying words we had ever heard.
